Who is eligible for Mercy Volunteer Corps?
Men and women, age 21, and over, gifted with a sense of humor, commitment, and compassion. Single or married with no dependents. All denominations. A high school diploma is required. Some positions require college or work experience.
How long is the commitment?
Mercy Volunteer Corps' domestic program is a one-year commitment that runs from the first week in August through July each year. Those volunteering internationally serve a two year commitment.
How will I support myself as a volunteer?
Mercy Volunteer Corps volunteers are provided with housing, a small stipend for food and personal needs, medical insurance, and transportation from orientation to the service site and home at the end of the year. Most volunteers serving within the United States are eligible for educational loan forbearance as well as an AmeriCorps Education Award. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to orientation in Gwynedd Valley, PA. Mercy Volunteer Corps is a year of living simply.
What is the application process and deadline?
Admission to Mercy Volunteer Corps involves a four-part process. After receiving your preliminary application, you will receive a full application, which consists of an application form, medical report, physican's report, essay questions, transcripts and four references. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through May 1 and priority is given to complete applications received by April 1. Prioity for international placements is given to applications received by February 15th. Once the complete application is received, it is screened by committee. If the applicant is then recommended for Mercy Volunteer Corps, a personal interview will take place in your area.
What types of populations are served?
Currently Mercy Volunteer Corps placements are in the continental U.S., Honduras and Guyana. The service sites are both rural and urban. Volunteers work with the homeless, elderly, persons living with HIV/AIDS, children, Native Americans, teenage mothers, physically & mentally challenged, Hispanic ministries and more.
Who chooses where I will serve?
The volunteer and the Mercy Volunteer Corps office work together to find the best match between a site and a volunteer. Geographic preference, job skills, experience, and the needs of the site are all taken into consideration.
