The long history of Mercy goes back to Jesus and the Gospel stories. The shorter history of the Sisters of Mercy goes back to mid-century Dublin, Ireland when a young woman found the call of Jesus too hard to resist.
Catherine McAuley, Foundress of the Sister of Mercy did not want to be a sister. But like many of the prophets in the old Testament her reluctance gave in to God's will and the Sisters of Mercy came into being. Her story of ministry, was short, only ten years, but powerful enough to have Sisters of Mercy around the world continuing her work.
The Sisters of Mercy are women committed to making a difference by serving the needs of the poor, sick, oppressed and uneducated, especially women and children. Mercy Associates and Mercy Corps Volunteers are partners with us in the Works of Mercy.
Inspired by the Gospel and following the tradition of Catherine McAuley, our foundress, we seek to meet the needs of people who are poor to enpower them to achieve lives of dignity.We hold strongly to the following words of the Direction Statement of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
"Animated by the Gospel and Catherine McAuley's passion for the poor, we, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, are impelled to commit our lives and resources to act in solidarity with:
- the economically poor of the world, especially women and children;
- women seeking fullness of life and equality in church and society;
- one another as we embrace our multicultural and international reality."
The story of Mercy in the Cincinnati Regional Community began in five different areas with five different foundresses - each with her own story. Cincinnati, Jamaica, Louisville, Nashville and Fremont each has a story which have different beginnings, but comes to the present with unity in the Cincinnati regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
Can I get in touch?
